1 John 4: Love One Another

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us.” (1 John 4:16a)

This is the fourth in our study series on 1 John.

Throughout this short letter, John assures us that we can know that we are God’s children. When we are secure in that knowledge, We will have joy no matter what our circumstances may be.

As we study the fourth chapter of the book, we’re going to learn how to recognize true teaching and false teaching. How do we know what and who to believe in an age where we are bombarded with information from every direction? How do we avoid being led astray by words that sound like the Bible but aren’t true to the Bible?

This is an important topic for us as women.

We’ll also discover several ways we can be assured of God’s presence and work in our lives. Those evidences of our salvation center around love.

In a letter that is just over 2000 words long, the word “love” is repeated 36 times. 12 of those times appear in the chapter we’re about to study. As we study, we’ll be looking for the word “love.”

And we’ll be asking a lot of questions:

  • What does John say about love?
  • What does he say about God’s love,
    • our love,
    • our lack of love,
    • our reasons to love,
    • our duty to love,
    • and the recipients of our love?
  • Do we love to earn God’s love
  • or do we love because of God’s love?
  • Do we truly understand God’s love for us if we fail to love others the way He loves us?

Grab your red pencil. We’re going to be drawing a lot of red hearts over the word “love” as the Holy Spirit teaches, convicts, and assures us through this 4th chapter of 1 John.
