Judges 4 & 5: Deborah & Jael

“So may all your enemies perish, O Lord! But your friends be like the sun as he rises in his might.” (Judges 5:31, ESV)

God delivers those He loves when they cry out for help. In this particular story, God used two women to accomplish this deliverance.

The story of Deborah and Jael is a recounting of God’s faithfulness, even in the midst of man’s dismal failures and rejection of Him. It’s a story of God calling weak people, like you and me, to be His soldiers, using the everyday things that he puts in our hands to accomplish amazing victories we could hardly imagine.

I hope you’ll join me as we study Judges chapter 4 (the story) and 5 (the song commemorating these brave women) over the next 30 days.

What Others Have Said

A Deeper Look
By: Susan Menzmer

I began this study with a bit of hesitation—after all, it is a bit gruesome, a story of fighting and killing. But upon taking a deeper look, I learned there is SO. Much. More! This is the story of a woman who fearlessly delivered God’s message, a man who timidly accepted that message, and another woman who obeyed God’s impression and allowed herself to be used to deliver God’s people. I learned that when God is leading us we never need fear, even when WE do not feel “enough,” He is, and with Him working through us our lives will take incredible directions.
