“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’” (Luke 15:31-32 ESV)
This story Jesus told about the prodigal son isn’t just about the younger son who left home. It’s also about the older son who stayed home and did everything he was supposed to do.
By the end of the story, the younger son is restored to the family, but the older son refuses to go in and celebrate his brother’s return. It’s really a story about two lost sons.
We’re going to study this parable in Luke 15. We’ll find and mark different words, make lists, and follow the arc of this well-known story.
We’ll find encouragement for parents of children who have strayed, and for parents who want to raise children who will continue in the faith.
We’ll learn about grace, forgiveness, resentment, and bitterness. Both flagrant sin and smug goodness can alienate us from God.
