Mary and Martha: One Thing is Necessary

“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 KJV)

This character study of Mary and Martha includes a story we’re very familiar with. But the story (and the characters) are worthy of more time and consideration.

We’ll look into the background of these characters, and other passages where they appear.

Walking in obedience to God often involves a long to-do list. But we also need to sit down at Jesus’ feet and listen. That’s how He will equip us for the work He’s given us to do.

This study won’t be hard, but it will be profitable for us and our walk with Jesus. I hope you’ll join me!

What Others Have Said

Bring your Burdens to Jesus
By: Susan Menzmer

This study was exactly what I needed! I love how Jesus met both Mary and Martha right where they were—with their own unique personalities. He did not chastise one, trying to make her a carbon copy of her sister. Instead He redirected to what is most important, and only after our eyes are on our Father can we then use the talents He has given us to serve Him and others around us.

Worship Jesus with Mary and Martha
By: Kristen Harper

By carefully studying five passages of Scripture in this course, we see Jesus's interaction with these two women, His teaching and correction, His love and gentleness, His protection and His worthiness. In these passages, Mary and Martha learn about worshipping and serving Jesus. Thanks, Pam, for directing our attention to Jesus and the one thing necessary, the good part: listening to and worshiping our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
