Philippians 1: For Me to Live is Christ

“(S)o now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Phil. 1:20b & 21, NKJV)

This chapter begins the letter to the Philippian church, written by Paul from prison. In spite of his circumstances, the opening to Paul’s letter overflows with thanksgiving, joy and prayer for those he is writing to. Not knowing if his life will be spared or not, Paul is not distressed, but remains focused on the glory of Jesus and the good of the church.

Here is a godly example of how to respond to trouble. What is a godly attitude in response to trials? How should we react?

This study will use many of our typical tools: We’ll study words, make lists, mark words, and look up cross-references. We’ll look into the history of the Philippian church. We’ll ask ourselves “what kind of man is Paul, who can say ‘for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain’?”
