Paul opens Romans 12 with the word “therefore.” So one of the first things we’re going to do as we begin our study of the chapter is to look back at what Paul has been saying in the first eleven chapters of the book.
Then we’ll be able to study Paul’s description of godly living in Chapter 12 without thinking it’s a list of things we have to do in order to earn God’s approval. We’ll understand that the life he describes is the grateful and logical response to all that God has done for us in Christ.
Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we get to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God. Because He has honored us when we deserved no honor, we’ll see that it’s only reasonable to honor one another. We’ll understand what an insult it is to Christ’s sacrifice when we look down at others or repay evil with evil. We’ll want to serve the Lord and live peaceably with everyone.
We’re going to dig in and study each of the commands Paul gives, knowing that we can live as he describes when our minds are transformed by the Holy Spirit. We’ll be studying a lot of words, reading a lot of cross-references, and doing a lot of thanking, praying, and repenting.
